Robert K. Barchey, Officer, EOW: 11/15/1993

While conducting his duties transporting inmates throughout the entire State of Arizona, Officer Barchey and his fellow Officer Dennis Grant, departed from the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence at approximately 8 a.m. About 6 miles west of Florence an east bound semi-truck lost control and skidded sideways into the front of the bus transporting the inmates. Officer Grant who was driving the bus was seriously injured losing his legs while Officer Barchey, who was the shotgun rider, was thrown through the windshield and killed. Twenty of the twenty two inmates being transported were injured but none attempted to escape.
